IPL 2026 Orange Cap: Players to Watch
Top run-scorers this season who are likely to challenge for the Orange Cap.
Virat Kohli (RCB)
The defending 2024 Orange Cap winner and the man who holds the all-time record for most runs in a single IPL season (973 runs in 2016). Kohli starts every season as a top contender, and IPL 2026 is no different. He already has 69 runs in his first outing, and RCB are the defending champions. Expect him to show up in big moments.
Rohit Sharma (MI)
At 78 runs from his first innings at a strike rate of 205, Rohit looks refreshed and dangerous. MI have historically been a batting-first side, and if Rohit fires consistently, he’s always in the Orange Cap conversation.
Ishan Kishan (SRH)
Kishan was the top scorer after Match 1 with 80 runs. SRH have built their identity around aggressive batting at the top, and with Kishan operating in that environment, big totals are expected.
Shubman Gill (GT)
The 2023 Orange Cap winner (890 runs) isn’t in the current top 10 yet, but GT plays multiple matches ahead. Gill’s consistency throughout a 70-match season makes him one of the strongest long-term contenders every year.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (RR)
Jaiswal isn’t in the early standings but is one of the most explosive openers in world cricket right now. When he gets going in a T20 season, he tends to keep going.
IPL Orange Cap Records, Key Stats And Milestones
Historical benchmarks and notable achievements in IPL Orange Cap history.
Most Orange Caps Won
David Warner holds the record for winning the Orange Cap the most number of times, three times (2015, 2017, and 2019), all while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli have both won it twice. Gayle is the only player to win it in consecutive seasons (2011, 2012). Kohli won his second in 2024, becoming the first Indian batter to win the cap twice.
Most Runs in a Single IPL Season
Virat Kohli’s 2016 season remains the highest individual run tally in IPL history, 973 runs in 16 matches, including four centuries. The closest anyone has come is Jos Buttler’s 863 runs in 2022.
Kohli came just 27 runs short of 1,000 in a single T20 season. That remains one of cricket’s great “nearly” records.
Youngest Orange Cap Winner
Sai Sudharsan became the youngest Orange Cap winner in IPL history in 2025. He was just 23 years and 237 days old when he finished the season with 759 runs for Gujarat Titans.
